Fluid Couplings VS Magnetic Couplings

A Fluid Coupling is a device that is used to transmit torque from a motor shaft to a load shaft. It is very similar to a transmission on a car. They offer the ability for variable speed and also a smooth start. Fluid Drive Couplings offer some advantages but they are not as effective as MagnaDrive magnetic couplings.

Magnetic Couplings transmit torque in a way that fluid drive couplings and flexible shaft couplings cannot, through thin air. This is truly a revolutionary technology that is quickly becoming the new industrial standard for all couplings including fluid, hydraulic, and flexible. A fluid coupling does have some slip due to heat loss. For example, if the motor shaft is turning at 1800 RPM then the load shaft may be turning at 1750RPM. This is the case with magnetic couplings as well but magnetic couplings have many advantages over fluid drive couplings. When a MagnaDrive magnetic coupling or Adjustable Speed Drive is operating fully engaged there is 1%-3%.

MagnaDrive makes a magnetic coupling called the MGD, MagnaGuard Delay Coupling, that offers a smooth start. The air gap changes from 1/8” to 3/16” during start up and this reduces torque transfer by 50%. Flexible couplings cannot offer this protection and they will strain the motor, shaft, and load.

MagnaDrive makes another ingenious product called the MGTL, MagnaGuard Torque Limiting Coupling, which offers complete disconnection if a load seizure occurs. This coupling also offers the same smooth start as the MGD but has an additional benefit. If a load seizure occurs, the MGTL coupling will completely disconnect saving the motor, load, both shafts, and the coupling. Clear the load, reset the motor, and the coupling resets itself. MagnaDrive gives a whole new meaning to the term “flexible coupling.”

When choosing which coupling best fits your needs there are several options available.
